PART 1 — Preliminary

The objects of this Code are—

(a) to establish core principles and rules of conduct to assist architects to act professionally and ethically; and

(b) to specify obligations imposed on architects when carrying out work as an architect; and

(c) to outline the minimum standards of professional conduct and practice that architects must meet when carrying out work as an architect; and

(d) to provide guidance to clients and prospective clients of architects about the standard of architectural services they are entitled to expect under a client agreement; and

(e) to promote the quality and safety of Victoria's environment and infrastructure.

The objects clause explains what the Code is trying to achieve – specifically, to uphold the professional and ethical standards of architects, protect clients by establishing minimum service expectations, and promote the safety and quality of Victoria's built environment and infrastructure.

The objects clause guides how all Code provisions should be read, interpreted and applied. If a particular clause is ambiguous, the objects clause helps to determine which interpretation best advances the Code's objectives.

When a question arises about how to interpret or apply any provision of the Code, the Code’s objects should be used to determine whether proposed conduct or practice under the provision supports professional standards, protects the client, and promotes public safety. If not, the proposed conduct or practice is likely inconsistent with the Code.
