Purposes of the Architects Acts
The Board exists to serve the public interest through the following purposes of its legislation. On-going Board projects fulfil each of these purposes in the following ways:

The registration of architects
_   In conjunction with the RAIA and architecture schools, conduct accreditation reviews of qualifications offered by the three approved universities
_   Conduct examinations of practical experience for applicants for registration
_   Maintain the Register and give advice about registration
_   Register new architects and maintain annual registration for individual architects

The approval of architectural partnerships and architectural companies
_   administer approval procedures
_   review company structure within regulations and advise firms on compliance
_   maintain annual registration of approved companies and partnerships

Regulate the professional conduct of architects
_   provide advice to the profession and public about the professional conduct regulations
_   disseminate advice to the profession through the regular Board Newsletter and to both the public and the profession via the Board website

Provide a procedure for handling complaints against architects
_   Complaints reviewed by the Board may be referred to Tribunal
_   Tribunals independent of the Board hold inquiries and make determinations
_   Manage procedures for the Tribunal process
_   Provide independent legal assistance to Tribunals
_   Provide advice to clients of architects about procedures and making a complaint
_   Policy and Procedures on complaints handling are available for the public and the profession in writing and on the website

Regulate the use of the words "architect", and the terms "architectural services", "architectural design services" and "architectural design".
_   Advise people of their obligations when using the prescribed words
_   Conduct investigations into use of the prescribed words and where necessary, obtain compliance through Magistrate Court hearings

National initiatives and cooperation with Architects Boards in other jurisdictions


The ARBV participates, through the national Council of Architects Boards (Architects Accreditation Council of Australia - AACA), in mutual recognition arrangements that support nationally consistent approaches to key Board functions; particularly in relation to:
_   Accreditation
_   Registration
_   Architectural Practice Examinations
_   Recognition of overseas qualifications
_   Alternative means of entry to registration - National Program of Assessment. (NPrA)
_   Professional conduct provisions
_   Continuing Professional Development policies
_   The National Competency Standards in Architecture.
