The ARBV

A brief overview

The Architects Registration Board has existed since 1923 when it was established to carry out the duties entrusted to it by the Architects Registration Act 1922. The Board has operated since that time. While there have been a number of revised Acts in intervening years, the current Board was established under the Architects Act 1991.The Act defines the Board’s charter and The Architects Regulations 2004 are made by the Board within the powers of the Act to implement its provisions.

The Architects Registration Board of Victoria (ARBV)is a self-funding statutory authority which has as its primary responsibilities, the registration of architects and approval of architectural companies/partnerships, investigation of complaints against architects, provision of Tribunal inquiry into professional conduct and accreditation of architecture courses.
Policy and administrative arrangements are focussed on achievement of the purposes of the Architects Act and Architects Regulations.

The Minister for the purposes of the Act is the Minister for Planning, the Hon. Justin Madden. The ARBV is responsible for provision of advice to the Minister on matters arising in relation to the Act and Regulations.

The members of the Board are appointed by Governor in Council in accordance with Section 47 of the Act. The Board consists of ten people appointed by the Minister from nominations from the Minister for Consumer Affairs, the Profession, Architecture schools and Allied industries.

The Office is staffed by the Registrar, Inquiries Officer and Administrative Officer.
The Board is assisted by committees and panels for the administration of examinations, Tribunal inquiries and accreditation of courses.

Our work is guided by the principles of impartiality, integrity, responsiveness and confidentiality. Board purposes are implemented equitably through established, transparent policy and procedures to act in the public interest and to assist the profession to meet its professional standards.

Awards and Certificate Conferring Ceremony

The Board holds its annual Awards and Certificate Conferring Ceremony, in December each year.
All architects who so wish, who have been registered in the previous year, may attend and receive a formal printed certificate in acknowledgement of their entry to the profession.

Recipients of the three ARBV Awards are invited to receive their award. See elsewhere on this site for details.
