Interstate & New Zealand Architects

In each State and Territory of Australia it is a legal requirement that any person wishing to use the title ‘architect’ or to offer services to the public as an architect be registered with the Architects Registration Board in that jurisdiction.

The key requirements for registration are:

  • Successful completion of a prescribed course of study or approved equivalent
  • At least two years of practical experience
  • Successful completion of the Architectural Practice Examination (APE)
  • Registration by the Architects Registration Board

Architectural companies and partnerships must also be approved in addition to individual registration. (Click on relevant sub-tabs under ‘Registration’ tab above.)

Applications to Register from Interstate or New Zealand

Mutual Recognition arrangements with other Australian States and Territories and with New Zealand mean that architects currently registered in any of those jurisdictions may register in Victoria on submission of the online application form accessed via the Register link at the top of the page, payment of the relevant fees and supply of the following:

  • Evidence of registration or a statement of registered status from the relevant Board
  • PI insurance certificate of currency (for practising architects)
