General information about business names
Business names are registered with Consumer and Business Affairs Victoria (Dept. of Justice). For general information about business names, please visit their site.
If someone wishes to register a business name that contains a word protected by legislation, Consumer and Business Affairs Victoria requires that the applicant gain the permission of the responsible authority to use the protected word.
The Architects Act 1991 protects the words "architect", "architectural services", "architectural design" and “architectural design services”. Therefore, if you wish to register a business name containing one of these words, you will have to obtain the Architects Registration Board of Victoria's permission first. This applies even if you are a registered architect.
Please note that the actual registration of a business name is up to Consumer and Business Affairs Victoria. They may decline registration for various reasons. See their website for more information.
