The Architects Registration Board of Victoria (ARBV) is empowered by the Architects Act 1991 to
_   register architects and approve architectural companies and partnerships
_   investigate complaints and arrange Tribunal inquiries into professional practice on behalf of the public or offer Mediation
_   determine architectural qualifications and accredit courses in architecture
_   conduct examinations for registration
_   require Architects to be registered and have Professional Indemnity insurance cover to practise as an architect.

These legislated powers enable the ARBV to act on behalf of consumers.

Consumers can check whether a person can legitimately call them selves an Architect by consulting the Register of architects, architectural companies and partnerships.

The brochure Working with your Architect provides advice on your role and the roles of your architect in a project.
The Architects Act protects use of the title and certain phrases. The value of this to consumers is that it is a short hand way of identifying practitioners who have satisfied the requirements for registration and therefore knowing that an architect possess the qualifications and expertise appropriate for the work that they do.

To be registered, an ARCHITECT must have
_   completed a 5-year architecture degree approved by the Board, (Bachelor of Architecture) or its equivalent and
_   passed the Architectural Practice Examination conducted by the Board. The exam tests practical experience and knowledge.
_   Professional Indemnity insurance cover

Architects are subject to the Professional Conduct Regulations governing their professional practice; contained in the Architects Regulations 2004.

Clients of architects may use the complaint services of the Board if they experience unresolvable difficulties with their architect.
