Registration + The APE
In each State and Territory of Australia it is a legal requirement that any person using the title 'architect' or offering services to the public as an architect, must be registered with the Architects' Board in that jurisdiction.

Within the provisions of the Architects Act 1991 and Architects Regulations 2004, if you wish to use the title 'architect' or the 'architectural services', 'architectural design' or 'architectural design services' for business purposes in Victoria you must be registered with the Architects Registration Board of Victoria (ARBV) and comply with the provisions of the Act.

The key requirements for registration are:

  • A Bachelor of Architecture degree or approved equivalent
  • At least two years of practical experience
  • Successful completion of the Architectural Practice Examination (APE)
  • Registration by the Architects Registration Board

Architectural companies and partnerships must also be approved separate from individual registration.

New Victorian applicants please check requirements for the APE.

Overseas architects
Overseas architects wishing to register please consult the AACA website. Overseas qualifications must be approved via the AACA process of review as there is no reciprocity between Australia and other countries (except for New Zealand). Overseas architects must also satisfactorily complete the Architectural Practice Examination (APE).

Applications to register from interstate or New Zealand

Mutual recognition arrangements with other Australian States and Territories and with New Zealand mean that architects currently registered in those jurisdictions may register in Victoria on submission of the following documents:

  • A photocopy of your original degree certificate or equivalent certified evidence of completion of a degree in architecture
  • Evidence of registration or a statement of registered status from the relevant Board
  • A brief curriculum vitae
  • A completed Application for Registration form obtainable from the ARBV

The payment covers the application for registration fee and the annual registration fee.

The Architectural Practice Examination (APE)

In each State and Territory of Australia it is a legal requirement that any person using the title 'architect' or offering services to the public as an architect, must be registered with the Architects' Board in that jurisdiction.

The APE is in three parts:

Part 1 Eligibility: Logbook

Recording 2 years' recent practical experience against specified competencies and a personal Statement of Practical Experience. Logbooks contain details of these requirements.

Beginning in 2006, your logbook must be accompanied by a signed Statutory Declaration attesting that it a true and accurate record of your practical experience.

Candidates may obtain a Logbook from the Architects Registration Board of Victoria. The Logbook contains detailed advice about all aspects of the APE and the Competency Standards against which assessments in the logbook are made.

Cost: $60.00 ($67 posted)

Please ensure that you give supervising architects and employers ample time to scrutinise and sign your logbook.

There are provisions for self-employed applicants. Please contact the ARBV.

Satisfactory submission of the logbook and Statement enables candidates to proceed to Part 2 of the APE.

Mandatory Experience

A minimum of 3000 hours Mandatory experience is required across the seven prescribed competencies. Candidates will be required, in their Statement of Practical Experience and Logbook Summary sheet to identify the quality and duration of experience recorded in either form of logbook and relate that to the seven mandatory competencies.

'Old' Logbooks If you have been using an 'old' Logbook dated prior to 2000 (book form) it can no longer be submitted as of 1 January 2006. The current form of the logbook is "loose-leaf".

Contact the Board office if you require further advice.
